The natural custom of studying time as an essential factor for the humanities and historical-artistic disciplines is now accompanied by that of space. This dimension, intended in the dual meaning of "geographical" and "social" space (in the sense of cultural, social, economic and political influences), contributes to the creation of new epistemological categories and opening innovative areas of research. The second half of the XX century saw the emergence of the social space model (Lefebvre 1974), challenging the conception of space as a simple container of history and human events. Consequently, space can be approached not only as a neutral and unchanging background but also as a concrete and mutable reality, constantly evolving with the human communities populating it. It is, thus, fundamental to acknowledge the multifaceted nature of the relationship between human beings and space as the starting point for achieving significant results and approach the matter in a non-exclusive way.

RESEARCH AREAS:
The Organizing Committee invites PhD students and young researchers in Humanistic disciplines to present a contribution on this theme. Some possible areas may include, but are certainly not limited to:

ARCHAEOLOGY AND ANCIENT HISTORY
- Network theory
- Territorial management in ancient societies, polis and "empires"
- Urban realities and localism

MEDIEVAL AND EARLY MODERN HISTORY
- Spaces and communities
- Environment, resources and conflicts
- The material culture of living
- Between microhistory and global history

CONTEMPORARY HISTORY
- Space and spaces of contemporaneity
- Migrations and exiles
- Places of memory
- Totalitarianisms, practices of internment and concentration in relation to space the symbolic construction of space

ART HISTORY AND PERFORMATIVE ARTS
- The inhabited and lived space as a reflection of the image of an individual or a group
- Pictorial, sculptural and architectural decorations of private or public representative spaces
- Decorative and sumptuary arts and their role in the symbolic construction of space
- The performing, cinematographic and ritual arts: space as stage and ritual

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- The call is open to PhD students and PhD graduates no more than two years prior
- Abstracts up to 300 words, plus a selected short bibliography
- Five keywords are requested
- A brief biographical note indicating the institute of affiliation to be attached
- Languages accepted: Italian and English
- Online participation guaranteed if justified

DEADLINES:
Abstract submission: 10th of April
Selection results: from the 20th of April
Conference proceedings will be published in the PhD editorial collection. Editorial guidelines will be later provided.

ABITARE LO SPAZIO O LO SPAZIO DELL'ABITARE?
Università di Verona (Italia), 17-18 giugno 2026, Campus di Santa Marta
Alla naturale consuetudine di studiare il tempo come fattore essenziale per le discipline umanistiche e storico-artistiche si affianca oggi quella dello spazio. Questa dimensione, intesa nel duplice significato di spazio "geografico" e "sociale" (nel senso di influenze culturali, sociali, economiche e politiche), contribuisce alla creazione di nuove categorie epistemologiche e all'apertura di aree di ricerca innovative. La seconda metà del XX secolo ha visto l'emergere del modello dello spazio sociale (Lefebvre 1974), che ha messo in discussione la concezione dello spazio come semplice contenitore di storia ed eventi umani. Di conseguenza, lo spazio può essere considerato non solo come uno sfondo neutro e immutabile, ma anche come una realtà concreta e mutevole, in costante evoluzione con le comunità umane che lo popolano. È quindi fondamentale riconoscere la natura multiforme del rapporto tra esseri umani e spazio come punto di partenza per raggiungere risultati significativi e affrontare la questione in modo non esclusivista.
