International Visiting Fellowships:
Art and the American Midwest

Applications are sought from early career researchers for the 2014
University of Nottingham International Office Visiting Fellowship
Scheme, to contribute to the project Art and the American Midwest, based
in the Department of Art History. The VFS allows early career
researchers from outside the European Union (EU) the opportunity to
complete a three month period of research in Nottingham, carrying out
identified research projects from Tuesday 22 April - Friday 18 July
2014.

The Art and the American Midwest project investigates the ways in which
the American Midwest has been visualised, represented and staged in art
and visual culture of the twentieth century. It considers the various
ways in which the cultural, social, economic, geographic and topographic
specificity of the Midwest is reflected in art and cultural production
both within the region and without, asking what the Midwest has
represented in the American cultural imaginary. The Fellow will have
expertise in the area of American Midwestern art and visual culture, and
their role will be include supporting the development of a research
network and conference based around the art and visual culture of the
Midwest.

The Midwestern United States is defined by the United States Census
Bureau as consisting of twelve states in the north-central and
north-eastern United States (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan,
Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and
Wisconsin). This project is concerned not only with artists working in
those states, however, but also with the notion of the Midwest more
generally and with practices that explore or reflect its meaning and
identity within America and American art more broadly. Whilst
considerable scholarly attention in American art history and criticism
has been paid to the artistic role of the west and east coasts, in
particular California and New York, the Midwest remains a neglected
topic that remains subject to stereotypical accounts that frame the
region as a place left behind by emigrating young artists.

The scheme is open to early career University lecturers or post-doctoral
researchers currently working at recognised universities (as defined by
The University of Nottingham) in countries outside of the European Union
(EU). For the purposes of this scheme, "early career" shall mean five
years or less experience of working in academia post completion of PhD.
