The Department of Art History and Film Studies at the University of Sydney, founded by the bequest of J.W. Power in 1967, is a leading centre for research and teaching. It offers a wide range of opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate study in many fields including early modern European, American, Asian and Australian art. The Department has established particular expertise in recent years in the area of global modern art. This post supports the teaching and research expertise built up by departmental colleagues exploring artistic exchange and international modernism.
In this exciting position you will:
• teach and potentially design curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate courses with a focus on modern art
• make a contribution to the research strengths of the school, including regular publication in quality outlets
• potentially supervise research higher degree students, i.e. honours and masters
• be a source/centre for interdisciplinary collaborations within the University and with external stakeholders
• contribute to academic administration.
To be successful you will need:
• a PhD in the area of modern art (1850-1950)
• teaching experience at tertiary level in modern art and be prepared to teach on key modern artists as well as engage with complex ideas of modernity
• an active research profile in modern art, and a developed plan for research across the fixed term period
• knowledge of the history of modern art in Europe and the United States
• some experience of administration relevant to academic life
• excellent communication and interpersonal skills (in English) to work with students and a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

• a PhD in the area of Asian art history, preferably modern or contemporary
• teaching experience at tertiary level in Asian art
• an established research profile and ambitious research plans in Asian art
• knowledge of the history of Asian art across more than one Asian culture
• specific knowledge of modern and contemporary Asian art
• academic administration skills
• excellent teamwork and communication skills to work with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders
• demonstrated fluency in English
• competency in at least one Asian language (sufficient for undertaking research and understanding scholarly literature).
