Beyond Disegno: New Studies in Early Modern Italian Drawings, 1450-1700
In conjunction with the Princeton University Art Museum’s exhibition of Italian drawings opening in January 2014, proposals are invited for a panel focused on current research in early modern Italian drawings. Putting aside a critical assessment of the concept of disegno, the panel seeks new and cross-disciplinary research on cultural, stylistic, and technical considerations of the medium. Topics may include:
-collecting drawings in early modern Italy: issues of commerce, display, exchange
-draftsmen working outside the major Italian artistic centers
-drawing from prints/printing from drawings
-distinctive working methods
-materials and supports
-revelatory versos (including those discovered through infrared-reflectography)
-connoisseurship and classification of the “unknown” or “anonymous” drawing
Please email a 150 word abstract in English and a CV to Laura Giles (lgilesprinceton.edu), Giada Damen (gdamenprinceton.edu) and Lia Markey (lmarkeyprinceton.edu) by Friday May 31st.
