Prints as Agents of Cross-Cultural Exchange

Session at the 2014 Renaissance Society of America conference

That printmaking’s ease of replication and comparatively inexpensive
nature facilitated widespread dissemination of printed works within
Europe is common knowledge. Yet this dissemination also occurred
beyond the borders of Europe, with European prints making their way to
areas as varied as Ottoman Turkey, India, China and the Americas. This
panel aims to explore the transmission of knowledge, whether written
or visual, between Europe and the rest of the world by means of prints
in the early modern period. Of particular interest are examples of
European prints that are re-contextualized and re-framed in
non-European settings, or papers that explore the mechanics and
significance of this type of exchange.
