History of Art, Media & Technology (1850-today).

This course explores the aesthetics, practice, and history of New Media Art, examining its evolution from early photography and avant-garde cinema to cybernetic sculpture, artist-engineer collaborations, and the rise of digital and internet-based practices. Students will gain a contextualized understanding of new media art by situating it within the history, culture, and politics of modern art and technology.
We will also analyze how photography, typography, illustration, and graphic design have been reshaped by new media over the past century. Key concepts in contemporary art and media technology—such as relational art, hacktivism, networks, interfaces, and surveillance society—will be introduced. Additionally, we will examine the institutionalization and conservation of New Media Art as a cultural field.
