Dimensions. Journal of Architectural Knowledge 12/2026.
Today, it is increasingly evident that being an architect involves far more than being a mere architectural designer; it requires navigating diverse fields of knowledge that integrate research across all scales of architecture, drawing upon the unique dimensions of architectural knowledge. In this issue, particular attention is dedicated to the constitution and conveying of this knowledge in the context of academic teaching. The knowledge of form is bound by various forms of knowledge derived from adjacent contexts, which interfere with the pure inclination toward architectural composition and the artistic nature of the project. As Bernard Tschumi insisted, »Architecture is not about the knowledge of form but about a form of knowledge« (Tschumi 1994: 140). This Dimensions issue embraces and questions this juxtaposition, proposing to replace the »but« and reflecting on the implications of the »as«. Rather than highlighting two opposing cases, this issue is interested in the elements that inextricably link and make them interdependent within the discipline of architecture and its contemporary field(s).
This Call for Contributions aims to investigate the academic context(s) of architectural design studios as laboratories of learning and, at the same time, practices of teaching. They are considered sites of mutual exchange between those who teach and those who learn, as collective environments that foster collaboration, as opposed to centralized decision-making models. By exploring the strategies that inform the teaching of architectural design as a discipline in the continuous adaptation of its generative processes – following the needs and ambitions of specific classes of students and responding to the pressing issues of our contemporary world – this issue aims to examine the constant, mutual interdependencies of practice, teaching and learning. This highlights how they inform academic training in architectural studies and lifelong projects of practice.
