Narrative constituting in art since the 2000s. Three case studies.

Present-day narrative patterns and their influence on the arts of today after the end of the “grand narratives” are to be examined. Language is not the only possibility for narration; images, objects and films also narrate. The philosopher Byung-Chul Han attests to a crisis of narrativity, since, from his perspective, narratives are increasingly transforming into forms of consumption, and communicating on social media platforms is being substituted for narrating. Against this backdrop of transformation in the information society and the disappearance of narration, the emphasis is placed in the scope of this workshop on various artistic narrative forms. The aim of the workshop is to elaborate on the heterogeneous characteristics of artistic storytelling: first, the narrative as a reaction to the unavailability of the world (I), second, disintegrated conceptual contexts and vibrating referentiality (II), and third, subjective narrating as a political and aesthetic act in practice (III). How do artists deal with historical narratives that have been reduced to silence?

Narrative Konstituierungen in der Kunst seit den 2000er Jahren (drei Case Studies).

Untersucht werden sollen gegenwärtige Erzählmuster und ihr Einfluss auf die Künste der Gegenwart auch nach dem Ende der „großen Erzählungen“. Sprache ist nicht die einzige Möglichkeit zu erzählen, auch Bilder, Gegenstände, Filme erzählen. Der Philosoph Byung-Chul Han attestiert eine Krise der Narrativität, da sich Erzählungen aus seiner Sicht immer stärker in Konsumformen verwandeln und das Erzählen durch das Kommunizieren auf Social Media Plattformen ersetzt wird. Vor diesem Hintergrund der informationsgesellschaftlichen Verwandlung und dem Aussterben der Narration werden im Rahmen des Workshops diverse künstlerische Erzählformen ins Zentrum gerückt. Ziel des Workshops ist es, die heterogenen Charakteristika des künstlerischen Storytellings herauszuarbeiten: erstens die Erzählung als Reaktion auf die Unverfügbarkeit der Welt (I), zweitens aufgelöste Bedeutungszusammenhänge und vibrierende Referenzialität (II) und drittens das subjektive Erzählen als politisch-ästhetische Praxishandlung (III). Wie gehen Künstler*innen mit zum Schweigen gebrachten historischen Erzählungen um?
