The KHM-Museumsverband is looking for a
Director of the Kunstkammer and the Imperial and Ecclesiastical Treasuries of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (full-time position)
to start on December 1, 2023
The Director of the Kunstkammer and the Imperial and Ecclesiastical Treasuries is responsible for research and conservation at one of the foremost collections of its kind in the world, in collaboration with our Director General and our Head of Collections and Research and within the framework of our statutory core tasks: collecting, conservation, research and education.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
• Leading the Kunstkammer and the Imperial and Ecclesiastical Treasuries (organisation and research)
• Planning and directing the conservation work undertaken by the restoration workshops
• Line management and staff development of 4 curators, 8 conservators and a registrar/staff assistant
• Developing the installation and presentation of the collections, especially regarding the visitor experience
• Developing and organising special exhibitions
• Communicating the collections’ research findings to different audiences
• Developing communication and education programmes for the collections, with a special focus on attracting new audiences and reflecting our commitment to diversity
• Developing and implementing research projects
• Leading the ongoing study of the collections’ holdings through scholarly collection catalogues and our online collection database
• Undertaking your own research, contributing to scholarly publications and giving lectures
• Management of resources, budget planning and control
• Acquisition of third-party funding
• Enlarging the collection through acquisitions and gifts
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• M.A. in art history, preferably PhD or equivalent scholarly achievements in a field relevant to the collections
• Documented in-depth expertise in a field represented in the collections
• Strategic and analytical thinking in the development of concepts for the collections, their presentation and communication
• Expertise in and commitment to object-focussed research
• Strong management and leadership skills, especially in staff leadership
• Experience in budgeting and budget responsibility
• Extensive experience and proven track record in the acquisition of third-party funding and donor relations
• Relevant publications and lectures
• International network connecting you with museums and research institutions
• Excellent internal and external communication skills
• Fluency in German and English
WE OFFER:
• Unlimited-term position based on 40 hours/week (5-day week; flexible hours)
• Place of employment: Vienna
• Gross annual salary of at least € 80,000 (all-in agreement). The position is subject to the collective bargaining agreement of the KHM-Museumsverband, Entlohnungsgruppe 1a. Additional renumeration reflects specific qualifications, relevant professional experience and extra time
