Turner and German Romanticism, University of Leicester

Matthew Potter

AHRC-Funded PhD Studentship
JMW Turner and German Romanticism: The influence of German thought on
the work and reception of Turner

Department of History of Art and Film, The University of Leicester
Tate

Applications are invited for an AHRC-funded three-year Collaborative
Doctoral Award studentship, starting October 2009, working with the
University of Leicester and Tate. The award will cover tuition fees and
provide a maintenance allowance.

This award is designed to promote the analysis of Tate Britain's
collection on the theme of JMW Turner and German Romanticism and place
it within an important international context. The successful candidate
will be encouraged to explore Turner's engagement with key figures such
as Passavant, Goethe, Schiller, Schinkel and Waagen, and the artist's
journeys to German states, but also to develop the project in a
direction that is appropriate to their own interests. The use of German
ideas by Turner and his critics, his Germanist networks, and the history
of the Tate collection of his work are amongst the topics with which the
project may ultimately engage.

The supervisory team will be led by Dr Matthew Potter (University of
Leicester) and Dr David Blayney Brown (Tate). The candidate will be
expected to engage with ongoing research activities at both institutions
that will address the history of Anglo-German artistic and cultural
exchange. Active participation will be expected in the post-graduate
community of the Department of Art History and Film at the University of
Leicester, as well as the Victorian Studies Centre (hosted by the
English Department) and the new Romantic Centre, co-convened by Dr Brown
at Tate. Furthermore the student may work on a display at Tate
connected with their research.

Candidates should normally have or be studying for a Master's degree in
Art History or an appropriate related discipline, and a reading
knowledge of the German language is desirable.

Letters of application, with a detailed CV and the names, e-mail and
postal addresses of two referees, should be sent to Dr Matthew Potter,
at the Department of History of Art & Film, University of Leicester,
University Road, Leicester, LE1 7RH. The deadline for applications is 1
June 2009.

Interviews are expected to take place in the second half of June. For
