submissions from graduate students in all fields of study for its
upcoming issue. Previous issues of PART can be seen at

PART13: The Expanding Field of Comics
The last decade has seen a dramatic transformation in comics' content,
readership and industry dynamics. Comics have been rebranded as graphic
novels and become a fixture in bookstores; the number and availability
of comics with sophisticated themes has increased; the popularity of
manga has exploded, especially among teen and pre-teen girls, attracting
female readers to comics in large numbers for the first time; internet
comics have proliferated frequently catering to niche markets; and sales
of superhero comics have declined while horror and war comics have
reappeared. With contemporary comics' newfound legitimacy has come
increased attention to its history. David Kunzle has supplemented his
definitive study of nineteenth-century comics with a complete reprint
and scholarly account of Rodolphe Topffer's work. In addition, key
comics from the early twentieth century, such as Winsor McCay's Little
Nemo in Slumberland and Dreams of a Rarebit Fiend and Frank King's
Gasoline Alley, have been reprinted. Museums and universities have also
begun to open their doors to comics, while the founding of The
International Journal of Comic Art in 1999 provided a focal point for
the emerging field.
The submissions deadline for PART13: The Expanding Field of Comics is
June 15, 2008.
We are seeking essays by graduate students on any topic in comics
scholarship as well as reviews of any recent graphic novels,
anthologies, or scholarly publications on comics. This issue of PART
aims to explore topics in any of the above areas or any other subject
related to comics history and aesthetics.
Submissions should be sent to
Doug Singsen at dsingsenhotmail.com.
