"Innenraum und Außenraum: Wie formt der Platz die Stadt?"

Als charakteristische Hervorbringungen der Stadt ziehen Plätze durch ihre
Zugänglichkeit und die unbebaute Form besondere Aktivitäten an, ja sie
ermöglichen diese überhaupt erst. Darüber entscheiden nicht zuletzt die
Gebäude und Ausstattungen, aber auch die Straßen und Wegeverbindungen, die
den Raum des Platzes herstellen. Die Modellierung des Platzes als Raum
unterliegt so einer Vielfalt von Faktoren. Eine entscheidende Zäsur erfährt
der Platz in der Neuzeit, wenn er sich die Platzwände unterordnet und
seinerseits auf die Stadt Einfluss nimmt, die er von nun an durch
Sichtbeziehungen und Achsen strukturiert.

Das Symposium möchte diese Doppelfunktion des Platzes - einerseits durch
die Stadt bestimmt zu sein, andererseits in diese zurückzuwirken - ins
Zentrum seiner Diskussionen rücken. Der Raum des Platzes ist keineswegs nur
eine ´Bühne´, vielmehr formt er das soziale Miteinander der Stadt durch
seine spezifischen Mittel und stellt es dar. Als Außenraum wird der Platz
so zum Innen, dessen Medien die Kräfte der Stadt einbinden und öffentlich
erfahrbar machen. Hier geht es um die Frage, wie die verschiedenen Medien
(Architektur, Skulptur und andere Bildkünste, Heraldik, ephemere
Ausstattungen) den Platz als Raum ´einrichten´, aber auch darum, wie die
urbanistischen Strukturen seine Gestalt prägen. Dabei verknüpft sich der
Platz in seiner Gestaltung mit sozialen und politischen Ordnungen des
Raumes (der Stadt, des Territoriums, der Nation und anderen politischen
Einheiten). Vielfach rückgebunden und beansprucht, ist er meist kein zu
einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt abgeschlossenes "Werk", sondern erfährt immer
wieder Aktualisierungen und Neubesetzungen, die ihn als Raum stets neu
"bauen".

Solche Raum-Zeit-Probleme treten in der Erforschung der Plätze klar hervor,
doch gibt es bisher wenige Erkenntnisse darüber, wie das zeitliche
Potential der Plätze als Aufbaufaktor wirkt. Die Konferenz möchte eine
methodisch reflektierte Diskussion darüber anregen, was die longue durée
der Plätze gestaltet, und privilegiert daher nicht bestimmte Epochen oder
Regionen. Kontrastierung und Gegenüberstellung sollen vielmehr den Blick
für die angesprochenen Fragen schärfen; auch Beiträge aus anderen
Disziplinen sind willkommen. Gefragt wird nach Themen von der Antike bis
heute, die sich möglichst folgenden Aspekten zuordnen lassen:

1. Insights: Blicke der Fachgeschichte(n) auf den Platz
2. Zentrum und Peripherie: Platz gestaltet Stadt
3. Vom Rand zur Mitte, vom Körper zum Raum: Skulptur und Platz
4. Citing the Piazza / Plätze zitieren Plätze
5. Time and place: (Ver-)Formungen des Platzes

Die Referate sollten eine Dauer von 25 Minuten nicht überschreiten und sind
in deutscher, italienischer, englischer und französischer Sprache möglich.
Abstracts in einem Umfang von 300 Wörtern erbitten wir bis 15. Mai 2008:

"Inside and outside: How Does the Square Shape the City?"

As distinctively urban creations city squares attract particular activities
by their accessibility and open un-built form; in fact, they create the
very possibility of such activities. This is determined not least by the
square's buildings and decorative elements but also by the streets and
connecting thoroughfares, which constitute the space of the piazza. The
modelling of the square as urban space, therefore, is subject to a wide
range of factors, not least of which is the decisive caesura it has
undergone in the modern era when it exerted its influence on the city by
subordinating its surrounding walls to a series of spatially integrated
sightlines and axes.

Through this symposium we would like to position this double
function of the piazza - its determination by the city on the one hand, its
counter effects on the city on the other - at the centre of discussion.
The space of the city square is by no means only a "stage;" rather, through
specific means, constitutes and continually shapes the city's social
relations. As exterior space the piazza becomes simultaneously an inside,
whose elements the different forces in the city integrate into the public
experience. Here, the relevant question concerns how different media
(architecture, sculpture and other plastic arts, heraldry, ephemeral
decorations, etc.) organise the square as space and how wider urban
structures shape its form. At the same time the piazza binds itself, in
its form, with the social and political orders of space (of the city, of
the territory, of the nation, as well as other political formations).
Constantly reworked and rearranged, there is, therefore, no particular
point in time when it can be deemed a finished "work." It continually
undergoes further transformations, modernizations, and reconfigurations,
which always newly rebuild it as a complex urban space.

Such spatial and temporal problems emerge clearly in research concerning
the city square, where there is as yet little awareness of how the temporal
potential of the piazza operates as a compositional factor. In this
context, the goal of the conference is to initiate a methodologically
reflective discussion on what constitutes the longue durée of the urban
square. Therefore, no particular epochs or regions will be privileged so
that, through contrasts and confrontations, the nature of the issues noted
above becomes clearer. In this spirit, contributions from other
disciplines are most welcome. Sought after are themes from Antiquity to
the contemporary era, which should be arranged around the following themes:

Papers should not exceed 25 minutes in length and can be delivered in
German, Italian, English, or French. Abstracts of approximately 300 words
are kindly requested by May 15, 2008:
