DIE EUROPÄISCHE BILDNISMINIATUR: KÜNSTLER, FUNKTIONEN UND BESTÄNDE

Internationale Tagung der Stiftung Miniaturensammlung Tansey, veranstaltet im Residenzmuseum Celle, 25.-27. Januar 2013

Vom 16. Jahrhundert bis weit ins 19. Jahrhundert hinein stellten Bildnisminiaturen die am weitesten zirkulierende Form des Porträts dar. Sie waren unübertroffen transportabel und fanden Verwendung in den verschiedensten sozialen Zusammenhängen. Bildnisminiaturen wurden bei Hofe verschenkt und unter Partnern ausgetauscht, sie wurden am Körper und in der Rocktasche getragen, anderen vorgezeigt und im Geheimen betrachtet. Eingefasst als Schmuckstücke und montiert auf Gebrauchsobjekte verbanden Miniaturen Kunst und Kunsthandwerk miteinander. Die Entwicklung ihrer spezifischen Techniken und Materialien ist durch beträchtliche Innovativität geprägt.

Es sind gerade die Vorteile der Bildnisminiatur, ihre Verdichtung auf kleinstem Raum und die persönliche Handhabung, die sie in der kunsthistorischen Forschung und der musealen Präsentation hinter das großformatige Porträt zurücktreten ließen. Der Kennerschaft eines überschaubaren Kreises von Spezialisten steht deshalb eine auffallend geringe Zahl übergreifender Forschungen und monographischer Arbeiten gegenüber, und die Erschließung der erhaltenen Bestände weist noch große Lücken auf.

Folgende Themenbereiche sollen auf der Tagung zusammengeführt werden:
- Einzelne Miniaturisten, spezifische Werkstattzusammenhänge und Herstellungsorte
- Verwendung höfischer wie privater Art und ihre Akteure
- Ikonographien der Repräsentation oder Intimität
- Wandel der Herstellungstechniken und Materialien
- Weniger bekannte Sammlungsbestände der Museen

Die Tagung findet anlässlich der für den 25. Januar 2013 vorgesehenen Eröffnung der fünften, Ausstellung der Stiftung Miniaturensammlung Tansey und der Publikation des begleitenden Kataloges statt: „Miniaturen der Zeit Marie-Antoinettes aus der Sammlung Tansey“.

Die Tagungssprache ist Englisch. Die Vorträge sollten eine Länge von 25 Minuten nicht überschreiten und werden im Anschluss an die Tagung gesondert publiziert. Reisekosten, Unterkunft und Verpflegung übernimmt die Stiftung Miniaturensammlung Tansey.

Vorschläge von Kuratoren wenig bekannter Miniaturensammlungen und von jüngeren Wissenschaftlern sind ausdrücklich willkommen. Exposés in englischer Sprache und im Umfang von nicht mehr als 1500 Zeichen erbitten wir bis zum 31. Mai 2012 unter Angabe von Namen, Adresse und gegebenenfalls der institutionellen Anbindung an:

EUROPEAN PORTRAIT MINIATURES: ARTISTS, FUNCTIONS AND COLLECTIONS

International symposium of the Tansey Collection of Miniatures, to be held at the Residence Museum in Celle, Germany, 25-27 January 2013

From the 16th century well into the 19th century, portrait miniatures represented the most widely circulating form of portraiture. Mounted as jewellery or often framed on everyday objects, they were easily worn or carried on one’s person and easily transported. They served within a wide range of social functions. Portrait miniatures could be offered as gifts at court and were frequently exchanged as keepsakes among loved ones. They could be displayed within one’s circle or contemplated in private. The portrait miniature often combined a high level of technical craftsmanship with artistic ingenuity and inspiration.

Indeed, the intrinsic attributes of the portrait miniature, its distillation within a minuscule format as well as its intimate nature, have tended to limit art historical research and museum exhibits to the greater advantage of large-scale portraiture. The expertise of a small circle of specialists is, thus, confronted with conspicuously limited findings in comprehensive research and the publication of regretfully few monographs. Knowledge about works in many existing collections remains to date substantially incomplete.

The following topics will be addressed at the conference:
- Individual miniaturists, specific workshop contexts, and places of production
- Use of both court and private types and their protagonists
- Iconographies of representation or intimacy
- Evolution of techniques and materials
- Less well-known collections in museums

The symposium will be held on the occasion of the planned opening of the fifth exhibit of the Tansey Collection and the publication of the accompanying catalogue, “Miniatures of the time of Marie-Antoinette from the Tansey Collection” on January 25, 2013. The conference will be in English. Lectures should not exceed 25 minutes and are to be published separately following the conference. The Tansey Foundation will assume travelling expenses, accommodations, and meals.

Proposals from curators of less well-known miniature collections and younger academics are particularly most welcome. Exposés should be in English and no longer than 1500 characters. They should be submitted by May 31, 2012, including name, address, and, if applicable, institution, and be sent to:

LA MINIATURE EUROPEENNE : ARTISTES, ROLE ET COLLECTIONS

Colloque international de la Collection de Miniatures Tansey, organisé au Musée de la Résidence à Celle, Allemagne, 25-27 janvier 2013

Du XVIème siècle au XIXème tardif, le portrait en miniature fut la forme la plus répandue de la représentation de la figure humaine. Sa facilité à être transportée et son utilité dans les rapports sociaux lui permirent un essor considérable. A la cour les petits portraits servaient de cadeaux. Entre conjoints ils étaient échangés. Portés sur soi ou dans la poche de sa veste, ils étaient exhibés par certains ou contemplés en secret par d'autres. Grâce au développement de techniques bien spécifiques et à l'innovation conséquente des matériaux, la miniature évolua; qu'elle fut montée en bijou ou associée à un objet utilitaire, elle savait allier art et artisanat.

Cependant les avantages du portrait en miniature, une densité picturale sur une petite surface et un usage plus personnel, ont pu nuire à l’intérêt porté à l’étude de la miniature qui, face au portrait de grand format bien plus en vue, n’a pas eu la faveur des recherches en histoire de l’art. Même si un cercle bien défini d’experts se soient investis dans ce domaine, très peu de monographies ont traité des miniaturistes et les lacunes dans la mise en valeur des collections peu connues sont immenses.

Les thématiques suivantes seront conjointement abordées lors de la conférence :
- Miniaturistes individuels, relations spécifiques entre ateliers et lieux de production
- Utilisation dans les milieux officiels ou privés et les personnages représentés
- Iconographies de la représentation ou de l’intimité
- Evolution des techniques de fabrication et matériaux
- Présentation de collections peu connues de musées

La conférence aura lieu à l’occasion du vernissage de la cinquième exposition de miniatures de la Collection Tansey, prévue le 25 janvier 2013, et de la publication du catalogue associé: « Miniatures au temps de Marie-Antoinette dans la Collection Tansey ». Les exposés se feront en anglais, ne devront pas dépasser une durée de 25 minutes et seront publiés au terme de la conférence. La Fondation Tansey prendra à sa charge les frais de déplacement, d’hébergement et de pension.

Les suggestions de conservateurs de collections peu connues et l’enthousiasme de jeunes chercheurs dans le domaine sont les bienvenus. Les sujets des exposés, rédigés en langue anglaise et limités à 1500 signes, sont à transmettre jusqu’au 31 mai 2012, en y mentionnant le nom, l’adresse de l’intervenant et son lien éventuel à une institution à :
