Chicago Art Journal - "In Relation"

Call for Papers - Chicago Art Journal
Deadline October 23, 2007

In Relation

The role of relationships in the history of art warrant fresh focus. Having
long played an essential role in the development of art, their relevance is
apparent in historical and contemporary practices. The Chicago Art Journal is
seeking papers, reviews, and works of art, that address the theme of
relationships in the production and function of art.

Relationships inform art through friendships, love affairs, kinship and
location, as well as through political, religious and ethnic associations.
In addition, artistic relationships take shape through pedagogy,
apprenticeships, workshops, patronage, salons, collaborations, collectives,
colonies, and more recently, residencies and studio programs.

In what ways are relationships evident in works of art - how do they relate
to the world, to the history of art, and to the idea of authorship? To what
extent does the formation of particular relationships support, challenge or
circumvent prevailing social systems? What are the goals, expectations and
limitations of such relationships? How have particular group formations been
the catalyst for the emergence of new techniques and mediums? In turn, how
have these innovations acted upon the dynamic of groups? The investigation of
this theme seeks to re-evaluate the social production and function of art in
private and public spheres.
