2nd International Conference "Tao-Klarjeti"

Batumi, Georgia;

5-8 September 2012

Interest in the historical region conventionally called “Tao-Klarjeti” has always been considerable among the scholarly circles. However, owing to various reasons, on the spot study of this highly significant region was very difficult for decades.

The situation has radically altered recently: the removal of artificial barriers has enabled intensive study of the area; accordingly expeditions of interested researchers are organized to Tao-Klarjeti. Scientific research into the region’s history, monuments and population is becoming more and more topical.
Interest is growing among foreign researchers as well. Especially significantis the interest evinced by Turkish specialists in the region’s monuments. The number of those who wish to make a tourist visit to this part of Turkey is growing among the broad public.

Due to all this, the study of the region has reached a qualitatively new stage. The new situation and modern reality have put renewed tasks on the agenda: complex and interdisciplinary study of historical Tao-Klarjeti and systematization of the accumulated knowledge; more coordination of Georgian and foreign researchers interested in the region, implementation of joint international projects; stirring further scientific interest in Tao-Klarjeti; study of the monuments threatened with destruction, and of the micro regions that will become flooded in the near future due to the construction of dams; urgent restoration of monuments of special historical and cultural significance; more popularization of the monuments of Tao- Klarjeti among the broad public and so on.

Against this background it is especially important to organize scientific forums, conferences and seminars at which Georgian and foreign scholars interested in the theme of Tao- Klarjeti will present the findings of their studies and their views, which is especially effective from the standpoint of many-sided study of the region.

An international conference of this kind was held at the National Centre of Manuscripts in 2010: “Tao-Klarjeti (History and Prospects against the background of Recent Studies)”. The conference in which dozens of Georgian and foreign specialists took part was met with a positive response. The idea immediately arose of the conference assuming traditional form.
