CALL FOR PAPERS:

American Association for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS)
Annual Meeting
Montreal, Quebec
March 30 - April 2, 2006

Deadline: 15 Sept 2005

PANEL: "Constructing Space and Identity in the Eighteenth-Century Interior"

This panel explores the role that interior spaces, rooms and environments
played in the formation of
eighteenth-century notions of identity and subjectivity. During this period,
interior spaces
provided a vital means not only of displaying status, but also of shaping the
identities of owners
and visitors, particularly as spatial encounters were increasingly interpreted
through ideas derived
from empirical and sensationalist philosophy. Indeed, the experience of
different spaces and
environments demonstrated the fluidity of identity within eighteenth-century
discourse. We invite
papers that examine strategies of collecting, patronage, and ornamentation in
eighteenth-century
art, architecture, and literature. Interdisciplinary and cross-cultural
examinations are
particularly encouraged.

Co-Chairs: Meredith S. Martin (Harvard University) and Denise Amy Baxter
(University of North Texas)
with proposals to go to Professor Baxter
