The exhibition Nine Points of the Law examines the relationships between
the creation, possession, and marketing of photographic and filmic images
as well as the power exercised in the well-targeted use of images before
the backdrop of cultural and economic developments. The exhibition
presents the work of both artists and activists in which visual worlds
both in and out of the art context are examined and the organizations
responsible for the distribution of images are brought into focus.
The title of the show refers to the English saying "Possession is nine
points of the law," referring to the often precarious causality between
(image) possession and control. The exhibition focuses on media images,
their use and control. Who owns the images? Who has control over them? Who
can use them, and how? Who has access to them? Who can alter them?
Quintilian's claim that "he who has power over images has power over
people" still remains true today. Using the controlled distribution of
images, economic strategists like Bill Gates as well as international
politicians and their media advisors install and maintain political and
economic power. In a world in which there is a seemingly almost unlimited
access to images, where visual worlds that have become similar due to
processes of globalization are omnipresent and invade structures of
everyday life, a world where cultural and ideological power is defined by
images, new methods have to be devised and learned in order to cope with
these developments and new realities.
