CALL FOR PAPERS
Concord/Discord: The Musical Analogy in Word & Image
One-day conference, University of Bristol, Saturday
6th March 2004
Interactions between verbal texts and visual images in
modern France have repeatedly been defined through the
analogy of music. Music and musicality have been
perceived as a common aspiration of both words and
images and as a basic reference for investigating
their similarity as media. In addition to the richness
of the Wagnerian and other models of expressiveness,
the shortcomings and inadequacy of the musical analogy
have also frequently been made plain. This one-day
conference will trace musical concord and discord, or
harmony and disharmony, in French art and literature,
focussing on both specific case studies and Word &
Image theory.
Papers will last for 20 minutes. Topics can address
any context from the late eighteenth century to the
present day.
Proposals for papers of not more than 350 words should
be sent by 30th
November to Richard Hobbs by e-mail
(R.Hobbsbristol.ac.uk) or post
(Department of French, University of Bristol, 19
Woodland Road,
Bristol BS8 1TE, UK).
