CURATORIAL INTERNSHIP, 2001-2003

The Busch-Reisinger Museum invites applications for the 22-month Michalke
Curatorial Internship, to begin in September 2001. Applicants must hold
citizenship in an EU or other European country, and have a demonstrated
interest in the art of German-speaking Europe, the primary focus of the
Busch-Reisinger Museum. Candidates should possess at least an MA in art
history or related discipline, as well as good English language abilities.

The Busch-Reisinger Museum is devoted to promoting the critical
understanding and informed enjoyment of the arts of the German-speaking
countries and related cultures of Northern and Central Europe. Founded in
1903, it is the only such institution in the Western hemisphere. The
Museum's greatest strengths lie in German modernism from 1880 to the
present, with outstanding holdings of German expressionism, Vienna
Secession art, and 1920s constructivism and Bauhaus works. The Museum also
has important collections of late medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque
sculpture, sixteenth-century painting, eighteenth century porcelain, and
art since 1945, which has been a particular focus for acquisitions in
recent years. Since 1991, the Museum has been housed primarily in Werner
Otto Hall, designed by the distinguished New York architectural firm
Gwathmey Siegel & Associates and containing galleries for the permanent
collection and temporary exhibitions, a public study room, and curatorial
offices.

The Harvard University Art Museums, of which the Busch-Reisinger Museum
forms an integral part, house collections of Western, Asian, Islamic and
Ancient art that rank with the best in the world. With the Straus Center
for Conservation, they are a major center for teaching and research. The
Michalke Curatorial Intern will work with Peter Nisbet, Daimler-Benz
Curator of the Busch-Reisinger Museum, share fully in the range of
curatorial activities, attend a weekly seminar with other interns on museum
issues, and undertake an independent collections-related project. The
stipend is $2,000 per month, plus health and other benefits. More
