Study Day Program: New Approaches to Performance Art (Vienna, 29 Jan-19 Jun 26)

The Study Day Program provides a platform for exchange with international experts whose recently published research has articulated critical perspectives on key questions in art history. This year’s theme is New Approaches to Performance Art. Conceived as a series of lectures and reading workshops, the program addresses advanced students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and other interested participants, and is realized in collaboration with art institutions in Vienna.

STUDY DAY 1: David J. Getsy (University of Virginia)

29 January, 6pm: “Illegitimate Heirs: Queer Artists’ Claims on the Modernist Canon”, lecture by David J. Getsy, mumok kino

30 January, 10am–1pm: reading workshop with David J. Getsy on his book "Queer Behavior: Scott Burton and Performance Art" (2022), Department of Art History, University of Vienna

STUDY DAY 2: Sabeth Buchmann (Academy of Fine Arts Vienna)

24 April, 3-6pm: “Performing bodies in/as/against systems”, talk and tour with Sabeth Buchmann, Kontakt Collection

25 April, 10am–1pm: reading workshop with Sabeth Buchmann on performance, cybernetics and infrastructure, Department of Art History, University of Vienna

STUDY DAY 3: Caroline Lillian Schopp (Johns Hopkins University)

18 June, 5pm: “In-action: Viennese Actionism and the Passivities of Performance Art”, lecture by Caroline Lillian Schopp, mumok kino

19 June, 10am–1pm: reading workshop with Caroline Lillian Schopp on her book "In-action: Viennese Actionism and the Passivities of Performance Art" (2025), Department of Art History, University of Vienna
