Paris
Deadline/Anmeldeschluss: 15.02.2026

Hugo Daniel

The Institut Giacometti in Paris runs a research programme on the history of modern art: the "École des Modernités". The aim of this programme is to support original projects in the study of the art of the modern period (1905-1960). As part of this programme, the Institut Giacometti supports original research on the modern period through access to its research centre, research residencies and publishing support in the form of a collection of essays. One of the main themes of the programme is cosmopolitan modernity in Paris.

The École des Modernités' collection of monographs, jointly published with Fage Éditions, offers unpublished texts which are the results of recent research on little-known or yet-to-be-discovered artists or movements that contributed to the vitality of cosmopolitan Paris in the Modern period. It aims to support young art historians in their first significant publications while making the results of their research accessible to a wide audience.

Call for applications:
This call for applications for publication in the “École des Modernités” collection of monographs is addressed to young researchers whose work focuses on the art of the modern period (1905-1960) and who offer original perspectives, either through choice of subject matter or the angle adopted. Special consideration will be given to a wide-ranging approach to art in the context of the study of cosmopolitan modernity in Paris.
Well-defined non-monographic subjects are encouraged.

Successful candidates will have their study published in the form of a book of approximately ninety pages, in the “École des Modernités Collection”. They will receive a fixed fee of 800 euros. The joint publishers will cover the costs of proofreading, editing and distribution and will provide 30 copies of the book to the author.
The Institute offers facilitated access to the archives and library of the Institut Giacometti, as well as research support for the successful candidate.

Admission requirements:
The text of the study, in French or in English only, which should be between 70,000 and 90,000 characters long, must be submitted by the successful candidates within one year of the decision to publish.
The proposed projects should be original and not be the subject of any publication, past or future (without prior agreement from the publishers). They should be based on primary sources that are at least partially unpublished.
Projects should be no longer than two pages (4,000 characters including spaces) and may be submitted in English or French.
Candidates should hold a minimum of a Master's degree in art history or aesthetics at the time of application.

Application requirements:
The application should include:
- a draft of the project (4,000 characters including spaces)
- a proposed timetable
- a curriculum vitae specifying the applicant's current situation, training, research, and academic publications and communications.
- an extract from a written study, preferably published, in French or English (25,000 characters maximum).

All the documents must be sent in PDF format in the same mailing (by titling the files as follows: SURNAME_Firstname_essai.pdf). The grants are awarded by a selection committee.
Only applications containing all these elements will be considered.
Complete applications must be sent to the Institut Giacometti (recherchefondation-giacometti.fr) by 15 February 2026 at the latest.

Apart from this call for applications, Institut Giacometti also welcomes unsolicited proposals throughout the year, to be sent either by post or to recherchefondation-giacometti.fr, for the attention of Hugo Daniel, PhD, Head of the programme.
Due to the limited number of works that can be published in the collection each year (two per year), applicants are strongly encouraged to reapply if their project is not selected at the first application.
