Arris is currently accepting submissions for articles and field notes to be published in 2026.
Arris is a peer-reviewed journal published by the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians (SESAH), a regional chapter of SAH. While the journal’s primary focus is new perspectives on the U.S. South, Arris publishes original scholarship on all aspects of the history of architecture and landscape, as well as approaches to preservation, with no restrictions as to geography or time period. Consult a most recent issue to gain a sense of the scope: https://muse.jhu.edu/issue/55756
Arris is published in partnership with the University of North Carolina Press, and is available in print and online. The full text of all past issues of Arris is free to SESAH members via a password-protected portal and available to non-members via ProjectMUSE: https://muse.jhu.edu/journal/838
Articles generally run 5,000-7,000 words and are blind peer-reviewed. They should demonstrate facility with relevant scholarly literature, research methods, field work (if applicable), and available primary sources for the subject. Articles proceed beyond a descriptive approach to draw new conclusions or present new theoretical paradigms.
Field notes are shorter contributions, approximately 2,500 words in length, and are blind peer-reviewed. These notes discuss significant ongoing field work or other research of interest to SESAH members. Arris welcomes contributions from archivists, museum professionals, and preservationists discussing current projects and methods. Recent field notes have discussed archival resources for the study of architectural history in Louisville, KY (vol. 36); Latrobe’s site plan for Capitol Hill (1803) in D.C. (vol. 35); freedmen builders and craftsmen in late-19th-c. Austin, Texas (vol. 33); structural aspects of Fay Jones' 1980s chapel designs (vol. 34); and contemporary Argentine and transnational preservation approaches to the Qhapaq Ñan Andean road system as a dispersed heritage site (vol. 36).
Only original work neither published previously nor under review for publication elsewhere will be considered. See Arris guidelines here: https://sesah.org/arris-submission-guidelines/. For our 2026 issue, please submit by December 20, 2025.
