Internationaler Workshop: "Settecento Malerei. Kulturtransferphänomene zwischen Italien und den Habsburgischen Gebieten".

Der zweitägige Workshop verfolgt das Ziel, die italienische Malerei des 18. Jahrhunderts als Mittelpunkt der Transferphänomenen zwischen der italienischen Halbinsel und den Territorien des ehemaligen Habsburgerreiches – mit Wien als Zentrum – zu untersuchen.
Die hohe Qualität und die renommierte Tradition der italienischen Malerei, begünstigt durch ein dichtes Netz internationaler Beziehungen, ermöglichten zahlreichen Künstler:innen italienischer Herkunft oder italienischer Wahlheimat eine erfolgreiche Laufbahn am habsburgischen Wiener Kaiserhof. Dies ist vor dem Hintergrund weitreichenderer diplomatischer und künstlerischer Beziehungsgeflechte zu verstehen, die Wien mit wichtigen Zentren der italienischen Halbinsel wie Venedig, Bologna, Rom und Neapel verbanden.
Der Beginn des Settecento war durch eine beträchtliche Ausweitung des transalpinen Kunstmarktes gekennzeichnet, der durch ein starkes Interesse am Sammeln italienischer Kunstwerke angetrieben wurde. Diese Aufmerksamkeit zog zahlreiche italienische Künstler:innen, darunter viele Maler:innen, nach Wien und an die verbündeten Höfe der deutschen Kurfürsten, wie etwa das Haus Schönborn und das Haus Wittelsbach. Gleichzeitig wurde eine Reihe österreichischer Maler:innen gefördert, sich in Italien weiterzubilden, wo sie stark von der lokalen Bildsprache beeinflusst wurden.
Der geplante Workshop wird sich auf mehreren Ebenen abspielen. Einerseits werden die Bedeutungen und Funktionen der italienischen Malerei im sozio-politischen und kulturellen Kontext des habsburgischen Wiener Kaiserhofs und verbündeter kurfürstlicher Höfe ermittelt. Andererseits soll das breite Spektrum an Dynamiken erforscht werden, welche die Transferphänomene der italienischen Malerei und des damit verbundenen künstlerischen Know-hows nach Wien und den Gebieten des ehemaligen Habsburgerreiches begünstigt haben.

Wir freuen uns auf innovative Vorschläge, die einen oder mehrere der folgenden Aspekte behandeln:
● die Rezeption der italienischen Malerei in Wien und in den verbündeten Territorien und die Rolle von Werkstätten und Kunstakademien in diesem Prozess;
● die italienische Malerei als Mittel der Habsburgischen Repräsentation;
● die Bedeutung regionaler Schulen der italienischen Malerei im Kontext der Wiener und mitteleuropäischen Kunstsammlungen;
● Grandtour und Kavalierstour;
● die Rekonstruktion von Netzwerken von diplomatischen, künstlerischen und mäzenatischen Beziehungen.
Beiträge zu anderen Aspekten, die den Schwerpunkt des Workshops bilden, sind ebenfalls willkommen.

Für die Präsentationen stehen 20 Minuten zur Verfügung. Die Bewerber:innen werden über die Annahme bis zum 30. Juni 2025 informiert.

International Workshop organised by Eleonora Gaudieri and Erika Meneghini

This two-day workshop aims to explore 18th-century Italian painting as the focus of transfer phenomena between the Italian peninsula and the territories of the then Habsburg Empire, with Vienna at its centre.
The high quality and renowned tradition of Italian painting, fostered by a dense network of international connections, enabled numerous artists of Italian origin or Italians by adoption to pursue successful careers at the Habsburg imperial court in Vienna. This phenomenon must be understood within the context of broader diplomatic and artistic networks that connected Vienna with key centres on the Italian peninsula such as Venice, Bologna, Rome and Naples.
The beginning of the Settecento was characterised by a considerable expansion of the transalpine art market, driven by a strong interest in collecting Italian artworks. This phenomenon attracted numerous Italian artists, including many painters, to Vienna and to the allied courts of the German prince-electors, such as the Schönborn and Wittelsbach Houses. At the same time, a number of Austrian painters were encouraged to further their training in Italy, where they were profoundly influenced by the local visual language.
The workshop will address two main currents. First, it will investigate the meanings and functions of Italian painting within the socio-political and cultural context of the Habsburg imperial court in Vienna and its allied courts. Second, it seeks to explore the various dynamics that fostered the transfer of Italian painting and Italian artistic knowledge to Vienna and the territories of the then Habsburg Empire.

We welcome innovative proposals that address one or more of the following aspects:
● the reception of Italian painting in Vienna and in allied territories, and the role of workshops and art academies in this process;
● Italian painting as a medium of Habsburg representation;
● the role of regional schools of Italian painting in the context of Viennese and Central European art collections;
● Grand Tour and Kavalierstour;
● the reconstruction of networks of diplomatic, artistic and patronage relations.
Contributions addressing other topics relevant to the workshop's main focus are also welcome.

Speakers will have 20 minutes for their presentations. Applicants will be informed about the acceptance of their proposals by 30 June 2025.

"Settecento Malerei. Fenomeni di transfer culturale tra l'Italia ed i territori asburgici"
Workshop internazionale organizzato da Eleonora Gaudieri ed Erika Meneghini

Le due giornate di workshop hanno lo scopo di indagare la pittura italiana del XVIII secolo nella veste di protagonista di fenomeni di transfer culturale tra la penisola italiana ed i territori dell'allora Impero asburgico con Vienna come punto focale.
L'alta qualità e la rinomata tradizione della pittura italiana, supportata da una fitta rete di connessioni internazionali, permise a numerosi artisti di origine italiana o italiani di adozione di intraprendere carriere importanti presso la corte imperiale asburgica viennese. Questo fenomeno va ricondotto entro l’ampio contesto di reti diplomatiche e artistiche che gettarono le basi per legami duraturi tra Vienna ed i principali centri politici e culturali della penisola italiana, tra cui Venezia, Bologna, Roma e Napoli.
L'inizio del Settecento fu caratterizzato da una notevole espansione del mercato storico-artistico d’oltralpe, nutrito da una spiccata predilezione per il collezionismo di opere d'arte italiane. Questo fenomeno attirò numerosi artisti della penisola, tra cui pittori e pittrici, sia a Vienna che presso le corti alleate dei principi elettori tedeschi, come nel caso delle casate Schönborn e Wittelsbach. Al tempo stesso, alcuni pittori austriaci vennero incoraggiati a proseguire la loro formazione in Italia, dove furono profondamente influenzati dal linguaggio figurativo locale.
Il workshop affronterà tematiche tra di loro strettamente connesse. In primo luogo, indagherá i significati e le funzioni assunti dalla pittura italiana nel contesto socio-politico e culturale della corte imperiale asburgica a Vienna e delle corti alleate. In secondo luogo, cercherà di esplorare le varie dinamiche che hanno favorito il transfer della pittura italiana e del relativo know-how artistico a Vienna e nei territori dell'allora Impero asburgico.

Accogliamo con piacere proposte innovative che sviluppino uno o più dei seguenti aspetti:
● la ricezione della pittura italiana a Vienna e nei territori asburgici, ed il ruolo delle botteghe e delle accademie d'arte in questo processo;
● la pittura italiana come mezzo di rappresentazione della politica culturale asburgica;
● il ruolo delle scuole regionali di pittura italiana nel contesto delle collezioni d'arte viennesi e mitteleuropee;
● il Grand Tour e il Kavalierstour;
● la ricostruzione delle reti di relazioni diplomatiche, artistiche e di mecenatismo.
Sono ben accetti contributi che affrontino ulteriori argomenti rilevanti per il focus tematico del workshop.
