Sang Sacré: Conflicting Associations in French Art (New York, 12 Feb 13)

Linda Stratford, Asbury University

The Association of Scholars of Christianity in the History of Art (ASCHA)

The Association of Scholars of Christianity in the History of Art is pleased to present Sang Sacré: Conflicting Associations in French Art featuring a host of nationally renown scholars. This one-day symposium will be held at Pratt Institute’s Manhattan campus, 144 West 14th Street, New York, NY. The symposium will held on February 12, 2013, the day before the College Art Association meeting in New York.

This symposium will feature papers that explore how Christian concepts of sacrifice and redemption, sacred blood—“le Sang Sacré”—suggest competing meanings, as represented in symbols, themes, and narratives. In the long nineteenth-century, French art demonstrated ways in which Christian associations with blood could be associated with power as an expression of the vengeful, covenantal, and salvific. Symposium papers address the metaphysical and aesthetic attributes of blood as an interpreter of cultural, political or spiritual values.

Speakers include Cordula Grewe (Columbia University), Kirk Ambrose (University of Colorado), Nora Heimann (Catholic University of America), Elizabeth M. Rudy (Harvard University Museums), Ron Bernier (Wentworth Institute), Jessica Basciano (Bucknell University) and Albert Alhadeff (University of Colorado).

Advance Registration is required. Please register online at: http://christianityhistoryart.org. Registration Rates are: Scholar (Full Day) $50; Scholar (Half Day) $30; and Student (with ID) $25.

The Association of Scholars of Christianity in the History of Art is dedicated to the facilitation and promotion of scholarship which examines the historical and contemporary relationship between Christianity and the visual arts.
