Call for Content - Contemporaneity: Historical Presence in Visual Culture.

Contemporaneity: Historical Presence in Visual Culture, a scholarly, peer-reviewed publication edited by graduate students in the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of History of Art & Architecture, invites submissions of short-form content for its upcoming relaunch issue.

Following our 2024 graduate symposium, “Ruin and Reparation: (Dis)Repair in Art and Architectural History,” this publication seeks to foster urgent conversations regarding the reparability and/or irreparability of longstanding historical narratives and structural inequities. Thinking alongside our departmental Constellations model, this publication builds upon the Reparation Constellation. We invite submissions from scholars across disciplines whose work engages with themes of reparation from all temporalities and geographies.

Please note that the editors are only seeking short-form (between 300 and 700 words) content submissions at this time, including but not limited to book/exhibition reviews, interviews, artistic work, and visual essays. Feature essays have been pre-selected from the symposium. We welcome submissions that focus on “repair,” broadly conceived across academic fields and subfields.

To submit, email the following to scs188pitt.edu:
• Your submission (.docx file)
• A current CV with contact information
• A biography statement of less than 50 words

The deadline for submissions is Friday, May 23, 2025. Authors will be notified of their acceptance in early June for publication in fall 2025.

All questions and submissions should be directed to Shawn C. Simmons, Contemporaneity Editor, at scs188pitt.edu.
