PhD Scholarship in Conservation History of the Sculptures held in the Garden of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

PhD Scholarship: in the frame of the National PhD in Heritage Science, the University of Rome La Sapienza, the University of Pisa and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection are offering a scholarship for doctoral research in Conservation History of the Sculptures Held in the Garden of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
The project involves extensive and detailed research on the sculptures in bronze and other metals held in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, focusing primarily, though not exclusively, on the sculptures on view in the garden of Palazzo Venier dei Leoni.
The main goal of the project is to determine whether the current appearance of the works corresponds to what was originally intended by the artists, or if this has changed due to the application of restoration protectives or coatings and deterioration processes.
The PhD candidate will conduct research on the conservation history of the works, as well as the design phase and the materials employed by the artists, with particular focus on finishing techniques.
The candidate will have access to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection’s archival and bibliographic materials and will also be required to conduct research in the archives or foundations of the artists being studied, as well as in foundries and institutions dedicated to the study of modern sculpture.
Application is open to master’s graduates in art history with specific experience in modern and contemporary art history and/or the history of art techniques and conservation.

The annual amount of the scholarship is € 16.243,00. The amount of the scholarship is increased up to 50% for authorised periods abroad up to 12 months. Every PhD student, with or without scholarship has a budget for research activities in Italy and abroad corresponding to 20% of the amount of the scholarship.
PhD student will mainly work at the University of Pisa and at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice.
PhD student is expected to be recruited from 01/10/2024 to 30/09/2027, under a 36- month research contract, and will be enrolled in the PhD program starting from the 2024-25 academic year.

Opportunità PhD: nell’ambito del Dottorato Nazionale in Heritage Science, è stata bandita una borsa di dottorato in Storia dell’arte, in collaborazione tra l’Università di Pisa, l’Università di Roma La Sapienza e la Collezione Peggy Guggenheim.
Il progetto prevede una ricerca ampia e articolata sulle sculture in bronzo e in altri metalli della Collezione Peggy Guggenheim di Venezia, con particolare ma non esclusivo riferimento al nucleo di opere collocate nel giardino di Palazzo Venier dei Leoni.
Obiettivo principale è comprendere se le attuali condizioni di lettura delle opere corrispondano a quanto originariamente voluto dall’artista o se, invece, tali condizioni siano state alterate dall’applicazione di patine e protettivi di restauro, oltre che da eventuali processi di degrado.
In tale prospettiva, oltre alla storia conservativa, saranno indagate la fase progettuale e le tecniche di realizzazione delle diverse opere. Un focus specifico sarà dedicato alle tecniche di finitura adottate dall’artista.
La/lo studente PhD svolgerà la propria ricerca giovandosi del materiale bibliografico e archivistico della Collezione Peggy Guggenheim. Dovrà altresì condurre indagini negli archivi e nelle fondazioni degli artisti oggetto di studio, oltre che in fonderie e altri istituti dedicati allo studio della scultura moderna.
Potranno accedere al percorso dottorale laureati magistrali in ambito storico-artistico, con esperienza specifica nel campo della storia dell’arte moderna e contemporanea e/o della storia delle tecniche artistiche e del restauro.

L'importo annuale della borsa di studio è di € 16.243,00. L'importo della borsa di studio è aumentato fino al 50% per periodi autorizzati all'estero fino a 12 mesi. Ogni dottorando, con o senza borsa di studio, ha un budget per attività di ricerca in Italia e all'estero corrispondente al 20% dell'importo della borsa di studio.
Il dottorando lavorerà principalmente presso l'Università di Pisa e la Collezione Peggy Guggenheim, Venezia.
Il dottorando è previsto venga reclutato dal 01/10/2024 al 30/09/2027, con un contratto di ricerca della durata di 36 mesi, e sarà iscritto al programma di dottorato a partire dall'anno accademico 2024-25.
