Between the end of the fifteenth century and more intensely during the sixteenth century, the institutions of the Serenissima proved aware that, in comparison with the overwhelming military power of the neighboring states - Habsburg and Ottoman Empire over all -, The technological updating of its fortifications was a decisive factor for the survival of Venice itself. The Republic, in fact, invested huge resources in terms of money, men and upgrades of the institutional apparatus for the construction of a system of fortifications that defended both the mainland and the sea state.
In this meeting, professors, researchers and PhD students of Ca' Foscari and I.U.A.V. will compare their research in this strategic area of the history of Venice, reflecting in particular on the concept of 'territorial defence machine' developed by Ennio Concina, historical professor of history of Byzantine architecture and art at the I.U.A.V. and at Ca' Foscari in La macchina territoriale. The planning of the defense in the Venetian Cinquecento, Rome-Bari 1983. The interventions will develop some aspects related to this study: the fortifications of the land and sea states in the sixteenth century, with a particular focus on Dalmatia; the experiments of the immediately preceding period (League of Cambrai) and finally the problematic relationship between architecture, political-strategic knowledge and military knowledge. The aim is to feed the debate on this historiographical concept that, after the exhibition held at the I.U.A.V. Library in Tolentini (5.6.-18.6.2023) leads not only to the re-edition of this seminal text for the history of military architecture, but also lay the foundations for a renewal of studies on military architecture overcoming some established historiographical schemes.

Tra la fine del Quattrocento e più intensamente nel corso del Cinquecento, le istituzioni della Serenissima si dimostrarono consapevoli che, nel confronto con la soverchiante potenza militare degli stati confinanti – impero asburgico e ottomano su tutti –, l’aggiornamento tecnologico delle proprie fortificazioni fosse un fattore decisivo per la sopravvivenza della stessa Venezia. La Repubblica, infatti, investì ingenti risorse in termini di denaro, uomini e aggiornamenti dell’apparato istituzionale per la costruzione di un sistema di fortificazioni che difendesse sia la terraferma sia lo stato da mar.
In questo incontro, docenti, ricercatori e dottorandi di Ca’ Foscari e I.U.A.V. confronteranno le rispettive ricerche in questo ambito strategico della storia di Venezia, riflettendo in particolare sul concetto di ‘macchina di difesa territoriale’ elaborato da Ennio Concina, storico professore di storia dell’architettura e arte bizantina allo I.U.A.V. e a Ca’ Foscari in La macchina territoriale. La progettazione della difesa nel Cinquecento veneto, Roma-Bari 1983. Gli interventi svilupperanno alcuni aspetti legati a questo studio: le fortificazioni degli stati da terra e da mar nel Cinquecento, con un particolare focus sulla Dalmazia; le sperimentazioni del periodo immediatamente precedente (Lega di Cambrai) e infine il problematico rapporto tra architettura, sapere politico-strategico e sapere militare. L’obiettivo è di alimentare il dibattito su questo concetto storiografico che, dopo la mostra tenutasi presso la Biblioteca I.U.A.V. ai Tolentini (5.6.-18.6.2023) conduca non solo alla riedizione di questo testo seminale per la storia dell’architettura militare, ma ponga anche le basi per un rinnovamento degli studi sull’architettura militare superando alcuni schemi storiografici consolidati.
