Staging Exhibit Display: The Age of Sustainability.

The project represents a second stage of the cycle of study and research conducted between October and December 2022, dedicated to the theme of staging.

Staging Exhibit Display aims at a survey of methodologies and stakeholders active in research on staging systems in transversal terms: an area of growing impact in the international debate, yet still divided among different disciplinary approaches and fields of practice. The goal is to theoretically and critically focus on the complexity of the staging device as a diaphragm that channels and communicates intentions, poetics, responsibilities, practices, resonances, and expectations of the exhibition message. This is achieved through the convergence of different disciplinary perspectives, forcing them to reconsider their theoretical foundations, methodological tools, fields, and research objectives.

The first cycle involved key figures in the international scene: Jeffrey Schnapp (Harvard University), Giampiero Bosoni (Polimi, Fondazione Albini), Jérôme Glicenstein and Bernadette Dufrêne (Université Paris 8), Cecilia Alemani (59th Venice Biennale). This second cycle aims to broaden the scope of inquiry, enriching it with new lines of questioning through the contribution of additional disciplinary perspectives. The issues to be debated touch on the material and immaterial values of staging, "physical and intellectual space," and the genesis of space starting from the communicative function of architectural language; the ethical, political, and participatory dimensions as new modes of exhibiting in the contemporary context, also extended to the immersive experience of VR; the orientations of museology in staging immaterial assets, such as costume and fashion.

This second cycle - funded by Iuav, and structured into four in-person and online events in November 2023 and March 2024 - is also aimed at the community of scholars.

Curated by Francesca Castellani with Roberta Albiero, Fiorella Bulegato, Antonella Gallo, Carlo Grassi, Alessandra Vaccari, Angela Vettese, and in collaboration with the research unit BiTES: Biennale Teorie & Storie – Venice Biennal, Theories & Stories
