Direzione regionale Musei Veneto, Museum of Palazzo Grimani/Museo di Palazzo Grimani, and the Venice School of Early Music/Scuola di Musica Antica di Venezia, sponsored by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.

Organizers:
Nastasia Heckendorff (Institute of Musicology Weimar-Jena)
Michael Klaper (Institute of Musicology Weimar-Jena)
Sophie Kleveman (Institute of Art History, Georg-August-University Göttingen)

The members of the Grimani di Santa Maria Formosa dynasty were among the most important collectors and patrons of art in Venice in the early modern period and have always been the focus of scholarly attention. However, the family's patronage of artistic goals and ambitions in the 17th century has not yet been studied in a broader context. The international workshop "Bridges to the Past" therefore aims to examine the artistic connection between Rome and Venice that existed through their patronage and included a variety of ancient works of art, painters, and musicians. This connection seems to counter the traditional narrative that the two cities were polar opposites on an artistic and political level. The workshop, which for the first time brings together scholars from the fields of archaeology, art history, and musicology, will address the following questions from an interdisciplinary perspective:
- What characterized the artistic taste of the Grimani in the 17th century? What were the similarities and differences between the arts?
- What were the motivations for the promotion of certain artistic genres?
- What influence did the Grimani's relations with Rome have on their promotion of art in Venice, and what impact did this have on the Venetian art scene?

The workshop (not open to the public) will be accompanied by two public events: a concert lecture at the historic site of Palazzo Grimani di Santa Maria Formosa (now Museo di Palazzo Grimani) and an evening lecture at the German Center for Venetian Studies Venice. Please see information below.
