[1] Interpretations of Longinus in the Visual Imagery from the Early Modern Period to the Present
From: Nafsika (Nancy) Litsardopoulou
Date: 22 May 2023
Deadline: 15 June 2023

How does one deal with the reception of a -primarily- philosophical notion in the visual arts? Although the question of the reception of the Longinian sublime has already been addressed in the relevant literature in recent years (Caroline van Eck, ed., Translations of the Sublime The Early Modern Reception and Dissemination of Longinus' Peri Hupsous in Rhetoric, the Visual Arts, Architecture and the Theatre, Brill, 2012), this session seeks to enhance the art historical understanding of the issue even further by focusing on a diachronic treatment of the matter in various artistic media.

Considering that the question of the Sublime becomes an issue of its reception, changing perhaps over time, we are seeking to attract varying contributions regarding this reception.

Topics/approaches could include but are not limited to:
-the relationship among artists, literati and patrons
-the aesthetics of antiquity and the Renaissance
-the aesthetics of modernity
-the treatment of the human body
-the existence of sublime/Longinian literature in libraries
-the tracing of relevant text dissemination
-dissemination of relevant theories
-politics
-convergence of the arts and religious ideas
