The Faculty of Architecture of Poznan University of Technology, Poland, calls for submission of proposals for volume 13 of Architecture, Urban Planning, Interior Design, Scientific Journal of Poznan University of Technology, entitled “Modern architecture in a historic city”.

Guest editors: Prof. Hanna Grzeszczuk-Brendel and Prof. arch. Adam Nadolny

The postmodern turn to the compact city has enriched the traditional structure of the historic city with its network of streets integrated with green areas, frontage buildings, a diverse social and functional fabric, creating the conditions for sustainable development. As a result, the expectations placed on contemporary architecture, created within an existing urban context, have also changed. The historic city, with its palimpsest record, contains both traces of traditional structure and spaces shaped according to modernist assumptions of, among others, The Athens Charter (1931). In cities destroyed after the Second World War, many modernist buildings were also built, which contributed to the 'second death of the city', but at the same time are interesting architecture, often already under conservation protection. Therefore, contemporary architecture should, by definition, fit in with the existing space and the objects that create it. It can also aim to restructure degraded areas of varying scale. Such activities make it possible to take into account, for example, issues of revitalisation and protection of heritage – the latter being not always fully accepted in case of modernism and post-modernism. There is also the issue of form, oscillating between a tendency to imitate and originality, the question of making representative buildings stand out from residential buildings, and the composition of green areas and squares as places for residents to integrate. Contemporary architecture in a historic city is not only a sign of the times, it is also a phenomenon that allows the question of context and the perception of the Genius Loci phenomenon to be redefined.
