[1] Associate Lecturer in Art History (pre-1800)

Start Date: 1 September 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter

Fixed term: 1 September 2022 - 15 January 2023

We are seeking to appoint two full-time Associate Lecturers with expertise in the history of art, architecture, urbanism or visual culture in the period before 1800. These are fixed-term posts replacing permanent members of staff on leave. We encourage applications from candidates whose work takes a transnational, cross-cultural or multidisciplinary approach.

You should already have, or be close to completing, a Ph.D. Effective communication skills are essential. You will be expected to offer attractive and accessible research-led undergraduate courses (involving third and fourth-year students). Preference may be given to candidates who are qualified to teach one of the following: Art and the Ocean: Aesthetics, Materiality, and Ecology, ca. 1500-1800 and Images and Knowledge in Early Modern Europe. We may also consider candidates whose specialisms lie elsewhere in the period before 1800 and are prepared to teach a different module from the existing course catalogue, which includes a range of options in medieval and early modern European and Islamic art, as well as Art of the Ming and Qing Dynasties from a Global Perspective. You will also be required to contribute lectures and tutorials on our first-year survey module. There will also be an opportunity to work with postgraduates, particularly teaching M.Litt. classes.

Like other members of the School, you will be expected to take on light administrative tasks as required by the Head of School.

We are seeking to appoint a full-time Associate Lecturer within the School of Art History. This is a one-year, fixed-term post replacing a permanent member of staff on research leave. Applications are invited from candidates whose research interests lie in the history of art, architecture, urbanism or visual culture in the period 1700-1900. We encourage applications from candidates whose research and teaching focuses on issues including race, gender, sexuality, environment, and politics and / or whose work takes a transnational, cross-cultural or multidisciplinary approach.

You should already have, or be close to completing, a Ph.D. Effective communication skills are essential. You will be expected to offer attractive and accessible research-led undergraduate courses (involving third and fourth-year students), including one per semester from among the following: Art, Science and Technology, 1700-1900; Romanticism and Visuality, 1700-1830; Images of Empire, or a related module from the existing course catalogue. You will also be required to contribute lectures and tutorials on our first-year and / or second-year survey modules. There will also be an opportunity to work with postgraduates, particularly teaching M.Litt. classes.

[3] Lecturer (Education Focused) in Museum and Heritage Studies

Start Date: 1 September 2022

Fixed term: 12 months (1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023)

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Education Focused) in Museum and Heritage Studies within the School of Art History. This is a fixed-term post replacing a permanent member of staff on research leave. You will be a scholar with a growing research reputation in museology or a related field and a commitment to delivering high quality teaching within the broad field of Museum and Heritage Studies. Applications are particularly welcome from candidates with interests in the history of museums, collections and decolonisation.

You should already have or be close to completing a Ph.D. Experience of working in the museum/galleries sector will be an advantage. You will deliver a varied programme of teaching and supervision on the MLitt programme in Museum and Heritage Studies, in collaboration with staff in the School of Art History, the University of St Andrews Museums team, and across the University. You may also be involved in the preparation of online teaching for the part-time Museum and Heritage Studies course, launching as a distance learning course in September 2023.

The MLitt in Museum and Heritage Studies at the University of St Andrews is distinctive in its combination of theory and practice. Run by the Graduate School for Interdisciplinary Studies, in association with the School of Art History and the Museums of the University of St Andrews, it prepares students for employment in museums, with broad training in all types of museums, galleries and other heritage organisations. Student learning takes place through a range of offerings including individual work placements, public engagement projects, and taught modules such as The Museum: Global Perspectives and Debates. The successful candidate will be based in the School of Art History and will contribute to teaching and research in the School of Art History more broadly.
