The Artists Ways of War (Lisle, 9-12 Jun 11)

Sarah M Horne

I am interesting in assembling a panel for "The Artists' Ways of War"
Panel for the 78th Annual Meeting of the Society for Military History at
Lisle, Illinois, 9-12 June 2011, whose conference theme is "Ways of
War."

Historians have long recognized a military shift from late 19th
century warfare to modern warfare of the 20th century, primarily because
of the First World War. This shift is also portrayed in public
perceptions and artistic depictions prior to and following WWI. My
research of this shift in art, society, war, and military theory
examines whether public perceptions of war in the 19th and early 20th
century can be viewed through a Jominian or Clausewitzian lens. How does
European art depict the theory and practice of war in the late 19th and
early 20th century? This panel will include other art, society, theory,
and military threads that would complement this topic and contain strong
academic analysis.

This panel's chair is Dr. John Broom, Norwich University. Commentators
and two or three co-presenters needed by Friday, October 1, 2010.
Interested parties may contact me at shornegvcs.wnyric.org with paper
proposal and CV.
I look forward to working with you. Thank you,
Sarah M. Horne, Graduate Candidate, Military History
Norwich University
