M.Litt Writing and Criticism at the Glasgow School of Art

The growth of the creative and cultural industries has seen the
re-emergence of historical and critical writing as a practice with
a valuable history and an invaluable currency. As the disciplinary
boundaries of practice are dissolved in contemporary art and
design, the ability of historical and critical writing to work
across disciplines has never been more appropriate.

On the MLitt in Writing and Criticism you will find methods of
Engagement with visual and material culture which will stretch
and challenge you in your exploration of forms and strategies of
writing and criticism about objects and practices in art and
design.

Seminars and supervision are cultivated from the high quality
research culture of the programme team, which is based in the
Department of Historical and Critical Studies, with unit content
based on staff research specialisms.

The programme specialises in the study of the generative
contribution that critical writing makes to art and design. On
the programme you will undertake courses in the history of
critical writing as a practice, and its role in contemporary
contexts. After this you will be able to develop a specialist
project with excellent supervision. Potential special subject
areas include: design history (C18th-C20th) and material culture,
design theory and sociology, cultural studies and consumption,
visual culture studies, photography and cinema studies, new
media, art history (C18th-20th), contemporary art theory,
curatorial studies, art criticism and art and design practice
research methodologies.

At the end of the programme students will be able to enter with
confidence into a professional environment in which historical
and critical writing is fundamental, such as for critics, curators
and administrators in art and design as well as for creative
practitioners.

M.Litt students will also be able to develop ideas and proposals
with programme staff for potential PhD projects in art and design
research.
