The University of Berne is seeking to appoint an
Assistant-Professor in History of World Arts
with a specialization in Art History of the Middle East or South Asia
The assistant professorship, starting 1st February 2009, will be
integrated in the Department of Art History and the Centre for Cultural
Studies, initially for a period of four years, with a possible extension
of two more years.
The successful applicant will represent a comprehensive range of
art-historical approaches to non-European Art History/Architectural
History with a specialization in the Middle East or South Asia. He or
she has a substantial record of research and teaching, involving
international networks. The appointee will be instrumental in building
up one of these new fields within the Art History department, and will
help to set up a curriculum for a new MA Program "World Arts: Music and
Arts in a global context," which is run by the Faculty's newly founded
Centre of Cultural Studies. The successful applicant will also be
actively involved in setting up the planned PhD program "Mediality,
Value, and Modes of Transmission in a global context", in collaboration
with representatives from the fields of Music, Drama, Dance and
Literature. In addition to directing students at all levels of their
studies, the incumbent will also be expected to integrate the new field
within the Centre and the department, and to participate in departmental
and interdisciplinary activities, as well as to share administrative
duties with other members of the department, the faculty and the
university. A willingness to use the English language for teaching
purposes is also expected.
Academic requirements for this position are a completed PhD plus a
"Habilitation" or equivalent (e.g. a second book). The University of
