Second Biennial Art and Architectural History Graduate Symposium

MARTIAL ARTS:
Art, the Military and State Power

Presented by the University of Virginia's Program in Art and
Architectural History and the Carl H. and Martha S. Lindner Center for
Art History

Friday, February 20th & Saturday, February 21st, 2009

The Graduate Program in Art and Architectural History at the University
of Virginia requests submissions to its biennial symposium. This year’s
theme will explore the connections between visual culture, the built
environment, military might, and the representation or institution of
governmental authority within a wide variety of media, time periods, and
geographic regions. Papers are welcome from graduate students working in
all disciplines and historical periods.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, contemporary
representations of the war on terror, protest art or propaganda of the
20th century, the art or visual culture of the American Revolution or
Civil War, Renaissance fortifications and Roman triumphs, as well as the
imaging or engineering of empire in both Western and non-Western,
ancient and modern, contexts. Submissions should include a CV and
abstract of no more than 300 words. Papers will be strictly limited to
