Call for Session Papers

College Art Association Annual Conference 2009

Conference location and dates: Los Angeles, California, 25-28 February, 2009

Session title:
Baroque Anatomy: Motives and Methods

Session chairs:
Karolien De Clippel, Universiteit Utrecht/Utrecht University
Victoria Sancho Lobis, Columbia University

Aiming at a still firmer basis for our current understanding of 'the
baroque,' this session investigates the seventeenth-century understanding
and articulation of anatomy. Our point of departure is the recognition of a
distinct conception of anatomy as transmitted through artists such as
Rubens, Caravaggio, Bernini, the Carracci, and Rembrandt, among others. By
relating these representations of the body to evolving ideas about
physiognomy, astronomy, philosophy, religion, and natural history, this
session aims to provide a fuller context for the development of a new
anatomical ideal. We invite papers that explore this epistemological shift
with reference to the description and deployment of the body. Paper topics
might address the relationship between theory and practice, between the
visual arts and other humanistic pursuits, or between artistic images and
medical illustration. We also welcome papers related to shifting studio
practices and techniques, the significance of live models, and the role of
ancient and Renaissance art as precedents.
