"Delicious Decadence"

The rediscovery of French 18th-century painting in the 19th century

The Wallace Collection will host a scholarly conference to accompany the
exhibition "Masterpieces from the Louvre: The Collection of Louis La
Caze". It is co-organized by the Wallace Collection and the Musée du
Louvre in Paris.

Nine French and British Scholars will explore different aspects of the
'rediscovery' of French 18th-century painting in the 19th century covering
the period from around 1830 to the last decades of the century. French
18th-century art had abruptly fallen out of favour after the French
Revolution. Two generations later, collectors, critics, artists and art
historians in several European countries gained a new interest in the art
of Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard and their contemporaries. Two among these
early collections stand out for their quality and size: the collection of
Louis La Caze in Paris, which he bequeathed to the Louvre in 1869, and the
collection of the Wallace Collection, given to the British Nation in 1897.
Specialists from Paris, Clermont-Ferrand, London, and Edinburgh will
present their research on the rediscovery of French 18th-century paintings
in France, England, Scotland and Germany during this crucial period.

The Conference will be held on 13 March from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm.
Registration starts at 9 am. The majority of the talks will be given in
English, some will be in French.
