Catalogue raisonné André Cadere (1934 – 1978)

The Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden currently presents a retrospective
exhibition of the work of André Cadere (1934–1978) from 27 October 2007 to
20 January 2008. The exhibition shows an overview of the œuvre of the
Rumanian artist who was a key figure of the Minimal and Conceptual Art
scene of the 1970s.

Cadere became well known in the 1970s with his “barres de bois rond“ –
round painted wood bars of varying sizes – which were minimalist art
objects as well as instruments of artistic intervention. Handmade by the
artist, the bars were composed of painted cylindrical segments, whose
height corresponded to their radius. The individual units were assembled
following a mathematical system of permutation whose logical sequence was
disturbed by one error respectively.

On the occasion of the exhibition the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden is
preparing the catalogue raisonné with a complete list of the round bars of
wood which is due to be published in January 2008. Any information
regarding the whereabouts or ownership of these works will be helpful.

Die Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden zeigt vom 27.10.2007 bis 20.01.2008
eine Retrospektive des Werks von André Cadere (1934–1978), die einen
Überblick über das Schaffen des rumänischen Künstlers gibt, der eine
Schlüsselfigur der Minimal- und Konzeptkunst der 1970er Jahre war.

Bekannt wurde Cadere in den 1970er Jahren mit seinen „Barres de bois
rond“, die sowohl minimalistische Kunstobjekte wie auch Instrumente
künstlerischer Intervention waren. Es handelt sich dabei um Holzstäbe von
unterschiedlicher Größe, die vom Künstler in Handarbeit gefertigt wurden.
Sie bestehen aus unterschiedlich farbig bemalten, zylindrischen Segmenten,
deren Höhe ihrem Durchmesser entspricht und die einem mathematischen
Permutationsprinzip folgend so aneinander gereiht sind, dass jeweils ein
Fehler ihre systematische Abfolge stört.

Aus Anlass dieser Ausstellung bereitet die Staatliche Kunsthalle
Baden-Baden derzeit den Catalogue raisonné der „Barres de bois rond“ vor,
der Ende Januar 2008 erscheinen wird. Für Informationen über Besitz oder

Catalogue raisonné André Cadere (1934 – 1978)

La Staatliche Kunsthalle de Baden-Baden présente une importante exposition
rétrospective de l’œuvre d’André Cadere du 27 octobre 2007 au 20 janvier
2008 qui tente de faire prendre conscience au public du rôle déterminant
que joua l’artiste dans les années 1970, au sein des avant-gardes de
l’époque dont il fut un acteur influent

Cadere devient célèbre dans les années 1970 avec ses « barres de bois rond
». Il s’agit de bâtons de taille variable, produits manuellement par
l’artiste, qui furent non seulement objets d’art minimaliste mais aussi
instruments d’intervention artistique. Les barres sont composées de
segments peints assemblés qui ont une longueur égale à leur diamètre.
Suivant un système mathématique de permutation, la succession des
différentes couleurs inclut chaque fois une erreur.

A l’occasion de cette exposition, la Staatliche Kunsthalle de Baden-Baden
publiera en janvier 2008 le très attendu catalogue raisonné des quelques
200 barres de bois rond réalisées par Cadere au cours de sa carrière.
