Between technique and semantics.
Material of sculpture until the 19th century
International Conference, 5-6 October 2007
Wojnowice Castle, Poland
Sculpture has always received relatively less scholarly attention than
painting or architecture and within sculpture studies the issue of
material was often underestimated. It was a consequence of the
long-lasting domination of idealistic attitude, according to which
material was subordinated to disegno. The objective of the conference is
to address the issues of the role of material in the sculptors workshop,
diversity of artists’ attitudes toward material, variety of materials
used, reasons for and consequences of particular choice of one of them as
well as semantics of material. A variety of the case studies as well as
papers addressing more general or methodological issues will be presented
by an international and interdisciplinary team of scholars (art
historians, conservators, geologists, philologists).
