Radical Failures (CAA Dallas, Feb 08)

Adrian Sudhalter

Call for Papers for a panel at 2008 CAA conference in Dallas:

Radical Failures: Unrealized Exhibitions and Publications of the Early 20th
Century Avant-Garde

Deadline for proposals: May 11, 2006

This session explores the significance and impact of exhibitions, journals,
and other self-conscious modes of presentation and dissemination employed by
the avant-gardes and their promoters in the first half of the 20c which, due
to various factors -- budgetary, conceptual, personal -- never materialized.
The panel does not focus on unrealized artistic works per se, but on the
vehicles used to promote and circulate avant-garde production in all mediums
(painting, sculpture, architecture, film, etc.). Ideally, papers should
focus on specific case studies of unrealized exhibitions, journals,
publications, and other projects about which enough is known through
archival traces to begin to reconstruct them. Emphasis is placed on the
archeology of these non-existent sites: What would have been included? Were
works created especially for them? Does our retrieval of these lost
contexts disrupt familiar narratives and/or change our understanding of
artworks intended for inclusion?
