With the decline of modernist urban design since the 1960s we are once again
facing an approach to the city where the hand of the designer is concealed
rather than stressed. From the many current plans for a "European City" to
the projects of the New Urbanism in the United States to some of the new
towns in China, the designer is at the same time present and absent, at once
exerting individual influence on the design process and yet claiming to step
back in favor of collective forces. In this way, the city is designed so
that the result may be perceived as authentic or even 'natural'. "Concealing
the Designer" will look at this development from a historical perspective,
relating it to a current that underlies the evolution of design in the urban
context throughout the 20th century. Our international group of presenters
from both theory and practice will investigate the critical implications of
this concept, and show its relation to both past and future urban projects.

Mit der Krise der städtebaulichen Moderne seit den 1960er Jahren sind
Architektur und Stadtplanung erneut mit einer Herangehensweise konfrontiert,
die die Hand des Stadtdesigners nicht betont, sondern versteckt. Der oder
die Entwerfende ist in vielen Entwürfen für eine "europäische Stadt" ebenso
wie in den Projekten des New Urbanism in den USA und in einigen der neuen
Stadtgründungen in China sowohl abwesend als auch anwesend, übt einerseits
individuellen Einfluss auf den Entwurfsprozess aus und geht dennoch davon
aus, sich zugunsten kollektiver Prozesse zurückzunehmen. Die Stadt wird
designt, und das Ergebnis aber dennoch als authentisch oder sogar natürlich
verstanden. Die Konferenz "Concealing the Designer" betrachtet diesen Ansatz
aus einer historischen Perspektive und setzt sie in den Zusammenhang einer
Strömung, die sich beinahe während des gesamten 20. Jahrhunderts nachweisen
lässt. Unsere internationalen Sprecherinnen und Sprecher aus Theorie und
Praxis werden die Wirkung dieses Konzeptes kritisch beleuchten und in Bezug
zu vergangenen und zukünftigen Städtebauprojekten setzen.
