Session: Concepts of Authenticity in the Visual Arts

This session will examine the construction, reception, and theoretical
grounding of the "authentic" in the arts. Museums deal with preservation
and forgeries, while other institutions are dedicated to the protection of
historical sites. We care about the authenticity of the past, but what
about the present? In our post-modern world, is there such a thing as
authenticity independent of our ability to invent it and to construe it? In
antiquity and the early-modern period, mimesis was a strategy to create an
"authentic" image; in the Middle Ages miraculous fabrication, inclusion of
relics, or the act of copying constituted the truth of images.
Contributions may address these issues from a variety of methodological
approaches and in all periods or cultural contexts. Papers focusing on the
theoretical grounding of the concept of authenticity and the image, past
and present, are especially welcome.
