Urban Image Now: Photographic and filmic manifestations of a
subjective city experience

College Art Association (CAA) Annual Conference,
February 20-23, 2008, Dallas, TX

Proposals due: May 11, 2007.

This panel sets out to investigate the forms and outcomes of
contemporary artists dialogues with the city and its image. Which routes
do artists take to depict the city and how have they shifted in recent
times? What are the languages employed to capture individual, at times
highly subjective views of the city? How do the uses of analog and digital
photography, video, and film respectively influence the assessment of
urban space? Papers focusing on questions of identity, movement,
narration, individual perception and fiction are especially welcome. At
its heart, the session aims to investigate two unknowns. First, in what
respects the city is representable at all today; Second, how different
circumstances around the world are inspiring a different culture of urban
imagery. Accordingly, observations on single cities, artists, or phenomena
are as welcome as comparative studies.
