This symposium invites a group of international scholars to reexamine the
phenomenon of antiquarianism in unprecedented detail by broadening the
focus of investigations to all types of antiquarian knowledge, activities,
and influences in East Asian art and visual culture. This three-day even
aims to make a more thorough examination of the subject to survey the
development of antiquarianism, to analyze in detail its extensive presence
in East Asian history, and to reassess its impact on art and visual
culture. Study of, interest in, and emulation of the past have been
important artistic elements and moving forces in the continuity, renewal,
and reshaping of the cultural identity of East Asia from ancient times to
the modern age.

Participants in the symposium include specialists in all regions of East
Asia. Intercultural exchanges involved in the emergence of traditions in
China, Japan and Korea will also be explored. We hope that this conference
and the resulting publication will cast new light on the understudied
influence of antiquarianism on the art and culture of East Asia, and will
help develop new perspectives for future studies.

Please see the Center website for the program details and paper abstracts
and registration forms.
