Orientations Vol 37 Nr 6 (September 2006)

T.O.C. Orientations Magazine Volume 37 Number 6 September 2006

The diverse articles this month share one thing in common: all address
the issue of cultural borrowings over both time and space, albeit in
varying degree.
Hsueh-man Shen examines the use of bronze mirrors in Liao Buddhist
worship and how it compares with practices in neighbouring China, Japan
and Korea.
Hsieh Mingliang assesses the extent to which Liao ceramics appropriated
Song wares and works of art in other media. In the second instalment of
his series on Ming archaeology, Yang Xiaoneng explores imperial burials
and how they may have influenced elite funerary practices in outlying
regions. Wu Hung reflects on the artistic inspiration of Asia and the
globalization of its art, while Peggy Wang explains how Chinese artists
of today interpret traditional book culture.
Bruce Coats argues how Yoshu Chikanobu's prints were contradictory
responses to Western modernization in Meiji Japan. Scott Johnson
discovers lost research that marked the beginning of the pioneering
scholar Richard Lane's lifelong engagement with Japanese woodblock
illustration.
Christie's CEO Edward Dolman speaks to Orientations about the growth of
the Asian art market - a development followed by our summer auction
reports from Hong Kong, Beijing, Paris, San Francisco and London. To
mark the beginning of the busy autumn, we preview gallery shows and art
fairs worldwide. In the commentary, John Finlay relates the remarkable
tale of how a Khmer torso was reunited with its head.
