James McNeill Whistler: The Etchings, A Catalogue Raisonné

This major research project is based in the University of Glasgow, in
collaboration with the Art Institute of Chicago and the Freer Gallery of
Art, Washington DC.

We are exploring the creative processes of the American-born artist, James
McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), as an etcher and printer. A major figure in
19th century printmaking, he created over 450 etchings.

We intend to show the evolution of each etching from the copperplate to
the final print, providing a unique picture of the craftsman at work. The
results of our research, the catalogue of Whistler’s etchings, will be
electronically published on a freely accessible website.

Ce projet majeur de recherche basé à l’université de Glasgow est élaboré
en collaboration avec l’Art Institute of Chicago et la Freer Gallery of
Art, Washington.

Nous étudions le processus créatif de James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903),
artiste né américain, en tant que peintre-graveur et imprimeur. Personnage
important pour les arts graphiques du XIXème siècle, il créa plus de 450
eaux-fortes.

Nous avons l’intention de montrer l’évolution de chaque estampe, de la
planche à l’impression finale, afin d’évoquer une image unique du maître
en action. Le résultat de nos recherches, le catalogue raisonné des
eaux-fortes de Whistler, fera l’objet d’une publication électronique sur
un site internet d’accès libre.

Die University of Glasgow (Schottland) verfolgt in Zusammenarbeit mit dem
Art Institute of Chicago und der Freer Gallery of Art (Washington) dieses
breit angelegte Forschungsvorhaben.

Wir untersuchen die kreativen Prozesse des gebürtigen Amerikaners James
McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) als Radierer und Drucker. Whistler war eine
herausragende Persönlichkeit der graphischen Künste des neunzehnten
Jahrhunderts und schuf über 450 Radierungen.

Wir beabsichtigen, die Entwicklung jeder Radierung von der Kupferplatte
bis zum endgültigen Druck nachzuzeichnen, um so ein einzigartiges
Gesamtbild des Meisters bei der Arbeit zu erhalten. Unsere
Forschungsergebnisse werden in elektronischer Form frei zugänglich im
Internet veröffentlicht: das Werkverzeichnis der Radierungen Whistlers.
