The McCord Museum is home to the largest collection of Canadian costume
and textiles and the Marie-Paule Nolin Collection Study Award is made
available to assist a research project intended for publication which
makes direct use of material evidence from this collection. In 2006-2007,
an award of $1500 will be made available to support research carried out
at the McCord Museum.
Application procedure
Applicants for the Marie-Paule Nolin collection study award should first
determine if the McCord Museum has relevant holdings by searching the
collections database on the McCord Museum Web site,
www.mccord-museum.qc.ca. If further information is required they may then
contact the Curator, Costume and Textiles, Mrs Cynthia Cooper,
(cynthia.coopermccord.mcgill.ca) to discuss feasibility of the proposed
research at the McCord.
The application
Project proposal (maximum 2 pages) should include: a statement of the
objectives and scope of the research; its significance; objects or group
of objects to be studied at the McCord; work carried out to date including
research in other museum collections; plans for dissemination of the
project; and a Curriculum vitae.
Deadlines
The application deadline is May 15, 2006. The award recipient will be
notified by June 16. Payment of the award money will be made in three
installments: the first following the signing of the Research Award
Agreement; the second during the research visit to the McCord; and the
third upon completion of a short report as outlined below. The collection
study project must be completed by March 31, 2007.
Obligation
The recipient will sign a Research Award Agreement which will include the
following stipulations:
- The recipient agrees to fully comply with the McCord's procedures for
the consultation of collections and for the photography of collection objects.
- Within 30 days of the research visit the applicant will be required to
produce a short report on the project and its relevance to the McCord
holdings, suitable for publication in the Friends of the McCord Newsletter.
- The recipient will acknowledge the Marie-Paule Nolin award and the
McCord Museum in any publication that arises from the research.
Selection
The proposals will be evaluated by the Marie-Paule Nolin Collection Study
Award Committee, based on the strength of the proposal and the relevance
of the research to the McCord's mission and priorities. Only one award
will be given. Only the successful applicant will be notified.

treasures, including the most comprehensive collection of clothing made or
worn in Canada; an extensive collection related to Aboriginal history and
art; and the renowned Notman Photographic Archives.
