Picturing People: Image and Representation'

Call for Papers

The face, figure and soul has been one of the most enduring obsessions of
the artist, from pre-Christian to contemporary times. It seems that the
need to visually record our fellow human beings is innate, and it is the
intention of this first themed New Voices conference to explore the very
diverse ways in which this idea has been realised. How does the image
confirm or negate a certain representation of a person? How does the
artist approach his or her self-representation? How effectively does
abstract art communicate notions of the figure? We welcome discussion on
these, and other, aspects.

The theme may be interpreted widely, and can include papers on both
figurative and non-figurative art in a variety of mediums, from any time
period.

Please send proposals of 250 words maximum for 30-minute papers, by email to:

Caroline Walker (carolineglyncotts.freeserve.co.uk)
and
Amelia Yeates (ameliayeates9916.freeserve.co.uk)

Deadline: 22nd March 2006
