The Department of Art and Design at Texas Sate University-San Marcos is
seeking an Art Historian, with area of specialty open, at the rank of
Assistant Professor. This teaching position is fully benefited, full-time,
and tenure track beginning August 2006.

Required qualifications: candidates must have completed the Ph.D. in Art
History by August 2006, and demonstrate evidence of an active research
program with potential for continuing achievement. Preferred
qualifications: demonstrated excellence in university teaching and
scholarly publications; ability to integrate regional art resources (from
the Austin – San Marcos – San Antonio region) into teaching. The
successful candidate should exhibit: (a) demonstration and/or promise of
excellence in teaching; (b) record of scholarly publications; (c) a
clearly defined research agenda appropriate to specialization; and (d)
strong writing and communication skills. (e) ability to teach one or more
semesters of the Art History survey (f) ability to teach a one-semester
interdisciplinary Humanities survey. Specific position responsibilities
include: (a) teaching three courses per semester; (b) advising, including
supervision of independent research and undergraduate Art History theses;
and (c) participation in regular program, department, and university
assignments/committees. All faculty must maintain professional teaching
and research practices aligned with the Texas State mission, expectations,
and goals.

The Department of Art and Design at Texas State has a long-standing
reputation for excellence and outstanding alumni performance. Recent
alumni of the Art History program have continued successfully in regional
and national graduate studies, museum internships (Austin Museum of Art,
Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art), and employment (Kimbell Museum of Art,
Harcourt Brace Publishers). The Department of Art and Design resides in a
new state-of-the-art facility, including well equipped large and small
classrooms and a Visual Resource Center with substantial collections of
slides, films, and digital images. Current faculty work actively with the
region’s art museums and collections.

Candidates must submit: 1.) Letter of intent, 2.) Current curriculum vitae
(CV), 3.) Statement of teaching philosophy; 4.) Three letters of
recommendation with full contact information including phone numbers
and mailing/email addresses, 5.) Up to three writing samples (published
materials and those in press preferred); 6.) Examples of syllabi,
assignments, and student work in hard copy; 7.) Evidence of teaching
excellence, including student evaluations (with basis of assessment); 8)
Official transcripts from all degree granting institutions; and 9) SASE,
if desired (materials will not be returned without SASE). A/D: January 30,

position salary is competitive.

An Art History Hiring Committee representative will attend the CAA 2006
Conference in Boston. Applicants are encouraged to indicate if they plan
